Maximize your savings with CFE net metering: solar energy for your home
Solar energy has emerged as a sustainable and economical solution for homes in Mexico. With growing environmental concerns and the ever-increasing costs of conventional electricity, solar panels are becoming a popular choice for those who wish to reduce their energy bills and carbon footprint. However, for many, the process of understanding how to maximize the benefits of solar energy can be overwhelming. This is where the Federal Electricity Commission’s (CFE) net metering concept comes into play.

What is net metering?
Net metering is a program that allows solar panel owners to connect their systems to the electric grid and receive credits for the energy they generate but do not use. These credits can be used to offset energy consumption from the grid at times when the solar panels are not generating enough electricity, such as at night or on cloudy days.
How does it work in Mexico?
The owner installs a solar photovoltaic system on his property, consisting of solar panels, an inverter or several micro inverters to convert solar energy into usable electricity, and a bi-directional meter.
The solar system is connected to the CFE electrical grid through the bidirectional meter. This meter records both the energy that is imported from the grid and the energy that is exported to the grid from the solar system.
During the day, when the solar panels are generating electricity, the system supplies power to the home and, if production is greater than consumption at that time, excess electricity is sent to the grid.
Energy exported to the grid is accounted for as energy credits. The CFE records the amount of energy exported and uses it to offset the energy consumed from the grid at times when the solar system is not generating enough electricity, such as at night or on cloudy days.
At the end of the billing period, the CFE calculates the difference between the energy imported from the grid and the energy exported to the grid. If the owner has exported more energy than he has imported, he is granted credits that are applied to his next electricity bill. If he has imported more energy than he has exported, he must pay the difference.
Thanks to net metering, homeowners can significantly reduce their electricity bills by harnessing the energy generated by their solar systems and receive credits for excess energy produced.
